The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, and the birds are chirping. Which is super cool and all but I'd rather talk about SEO!
For small businesses, SEO isn't just another marketing tactic—it's a lifeline. In a digital world where consumers turn to search engines for everything from product recommendations to local services, a strong SEO strategy can mean the difference between being discovered by potential customers or fading into obscurity.
And no one has ever wanted to fade into obscurity. EVER!
Think I'm just being dramatic? Not this time! A whopping 75% of users never venture beyond that first page of search results; making SEO one of the MOST IMPORTANT factors in your small business's success. #nopressure
So, if you're serious about elevating your website to the top of the search rankings and leaving your competitors in the dust - GREAT NEWS - you're in the right place.
In this blog, we're diving deep into the world of SEO, unpacking the strategies you need to know to boost your online visibility, drive more traffic to your site, and SPRING INTO BETTER SEO!
It Always Starts with Intention
I HATE Masterclasses. I am a lover of learning and a fan of self-education, but let's pause for a moment and ask ourselves: can true SEO mastery be attained over a cup of coffee and a PowerPoint presentation?
The answer, my friends, is a resounding no. Even if that person teaching you is a REAL expert with REAL success (which is rarer than you'd think!) SEO isn't a one-size-fits-all endeavor, and anyone who tells you otherwise is likely selling a modern-day snake oil brought to you kindly by late-stage capitalism.
In a world where everyone's trying to crack the SEO code with the same tired copy-and-paste-tactics, standing out means taking a different route, the good news is it's also a more effective route. And it starts with intention.
Intentional SEO isn't about following the crowd; it's about knowing your audience inside and out, understanding their quirks, their needs, and their deepest desires. It's about putting yourself in their shoes, anticipating their questions, and crafting content that speaks directly to their hearts and minds.
No expert can teach you how to do that. So step one is to grab that cup of coffee I just mentioned and sit down for a quick brainstorming session. The insights that come out of your big beautiful brain can help you identify potential new keywords for website pages or topics for content such as blogs, newsletters, or social media.
Who is your target customer?
What do they want? (As it relates to your business & BEYOND)
How can you serve them?
What topics might they be interested?
What makes them happy?
What are their values?
Systemize the Small Stuff
Let's talk about the nitty-gritty of SEO—the small details that can make a big difference in your website's visibility. Keeping up with these tasks doesn't have to be a headache. Here are some simple ways to systemize the small stuff and keep your SEO game strong:
Regular updates to Meta descriptions:Â Meta descriptions might seem like minor details, but they play a crucial role in attracting clicks from search engine users. Make it a habit to review and update your meta descriptions regularly. Set a reminder on your calendar every few weeks to ensure they're always fresh and optimized for maximum impact.
Schedule Regular Website Audits: This sounds harder than it is. Simply set aside time regularly to run through your website as if you were a user and test every link, read all content, and look for areas to fix or improve. During your audit, you should fix anything vital to the design and function but improvement notes can be implemented whenever you're ready. Pro-Tip: Set up Google Search Console for FREE and be able to get even more insights.
Invest in Improvements: Speaking of improvements the easiest way to get those handled is to plan to get them handled. If you're a DIYer you can simply block a regular block in your calendar to tackle your ongoing list of potential web improvements. OR you can hire an awesome developer like ME and simply set a monthly budget and let them work through that ongoing list.
Create Content with a Plan: If you're producing ANY internet-based content and you aren't doing the keyword research to inform your approach - you can stop NOW. This is the MOST true for blog content but can apply to all internet content including email content. You can keyword research every time you produce a piece of content OR you can plan to do some quality research (or pay for some quality research) once a month or quarter and use that to drive engagement like never before!
Hit Them Hard (on occasion)
Once you've mastered the small stuff you can pivot to occasion big-hitters. These can be anything you want to really start ranking for.
For example, we have an awesome 4+ year client named John who owns Kapture Pest Control in New Jersey; and he wanted to rank for "best pest control company in New Jersey".
So guess what we did. We wrote a page called Best Pest Control in New Jersey. And because we're classy we made that page an interactable, informative guide that is useful to consumers and features several (slightly different service area) competitors.
Efforts like this can take place a few times a year but should be planned with a specific call to action in mind. They can be done with small budgets and can pack a HUGE punch.
So, what's the key to SEO success?
As we've navigated through the intricacies of SEO, one thing has become abundantly clear: it's not just about - in fact it's NEVER about - following a set of prescribed steps or hoping for overnight success. It's about embracing a mindset of intentionality, consistency, and continuous improvement.
The journey to SEO mastery is multifaceted, requiring a deep understanding of your audience, a commitment to regular maintenance and optimization, and the occasional bold move to capture attention and drive results. By systemizing the small stuff, planning with purpose, and hitting them hard with strategic efforts you can effectively elevate our SEO game and achieve tangible results for our businesses.
So, let's not be lured by the promise of quick fixes or the allure of overnight success. Instead, let's embrace the journey, knowing that each small step forward brings us closer to our goals. With patience, perseverance, and a willingness to adapt, we can navigate the ever-changing landscape of SEO and emerge victorious.
...but if that sounds like too much work. We can help!
